Soulful Sam O.B.

Meet Sam Obey.

He deejays and produces as Sam O.B. and runs the record label Astro Nautico with friends Paul Jones and Kuhn. His latest release, Common Ground, is his most self-assured work to date, showcasing a bright and bold funk sound—and for the first time—his own vocals. The confident nature of his music is no fluke: he's spent the better part of the last ten years honing in on a sound he can truly call his own.

Between 2008 and 2011, Brooklyn-based Obey used his own label to release several projects, quickly catching the attention of labels overseas. By 2013, under the name Obey City, he released his EP Champagne Sounds via Scottish imprint LuckyMe. Obey's sound fit right in with the maximalist approach of the label, blending UK Bass, Juke and Hip-Hop into glossy club tracks.

After a second guest feature-heavy release, Merlot Sounds, in 2015 and tours in the US, Europe and Japan, he was ready for a stylistic change. He dropped the Obey City moniker, preferring Sam O.B. instead, then starting cranking out funk-infused jams he calls electronic soul music

He's prepared a sample pack for Outro showcasing the building blocks of his new sound: vintage drum machine programming, disco guitar grooves and summery synths. Download them for free exclusively on Outro
